Follow These Steps To Put Out a Grease Fire

While cooking can be a fun activity, it also holds many potential risks, one of which is starting a grease fire. Unfortunately, these fires are more complicated to extinguish than most other fires, since making the wrong move can result in spreading the fire further. Follow these steps to put out this type of fire safely.

1. Remove the Heat

A fire will never stop if the heat source remains active. As such, you should prioritize taking away the heat from the fire if possible. If the fire originates from the top of the oven, shut off the appliance from a safe distance. If the fire comes from a microwave or inside an oven, turn them off at your safety, but avoid opening the door, as the sudden oxygen can feed the flame.

2. Extinguish or Control the Fire

This step will vary depending on the fire. If it originates from a microwave or within an oven, evacuate and call 911. If the fire is small, you can contain it with a metal pan, reducing the oxygen it receives. Avoid glass or ceramic, since the heat can shatter these materials. You may use baking soda or salt to extinguish this grease fire. If you own a class K fire extinguisher, use it on the fire. Avoid putting out the fire with water or a water-based extinguisher, as the combination of water and oil can create a volatile result.

3. Call for Help

If you succeed in extinguishing this small fire with the above methods, you can call an emergency restoration company to handle the fire cleanup. If the above steps still have not extinguished the fire, or it is too large to handle, you will need to leave the building and contact 911 as soon as possible. Provide detailed information to the fire department.
Even though a grease fire requires more care than most other fires, it is not impossible to eliminate or control either. These tips can help you stop or reduce fire damage to your Campo Verde, AZ home.
